SEISA,

Im sure everyone has been following the news on hurricane Ike and have seen the reports covering Galveston. I've been asked to keep SEISA updated on our situation.

TAMUG held a mandatory evacuation on Wed, sept 10th. which allowed everyone to leave the island before the city itself was evacuated, as far as we know everyone made it out safely and we haven't heard of any team members being in harms way.

The team made huge efforts to secure our boats for hurricane force winds and flooding. Each boat was de-masted, flipped, and secured to grounded posts at 4 points per boat (bow, stern, port/starboard jib cleats), our sailing center was also boarded up.

Unfortunately a report came in today that described extensive damage to our sail shed, the sail loft, and our sailing center Benison. The launching dock has been washed up onto land, and the 420's have been scattered. The extent of damage to the boats themselves is unknown, we will soon hopefully find out.

School officials have commented on damage to the Texas A&M at Galveston campus: On the Mitchell Campus, there is some damage, but it appears to be repairable at this point. We know that the roadway leading to the bridge to campus has eroded and is impassable at the current time. The roof to Mariner Hall has been partially damaged, as has the roof to the Sea Aggie Center. The academic buildings appear to have made it through the storm relatively unscathed, other than some broken glass. There is no evidence of the storm surge reaching these buildings.

At Fort Crockett, one of the highest points on Galveston Island, we did not see any visible structural or water damage. We have not been able to access the Teichman campus as of Sunday afternoon.

The key point to emphasize is that the City of Galveston’s infrastructure has been severely damaged, according to preliminary reports. This means that we are unsure as to when the island will have basic services such as electricity, water, sewer and telecommunications. In addition, the approaches to the causeway from the mainland to Galveston Island have been compromised by debris. Public access is prohibited at this time.

Updates can be found at www.tamug.edu

We will keep everyone updated as soon as information is available. We look forward to getting back on the water.

In addition, a huge "Thank you" to the University of Texas for hosting our Troy Swetnam regatta. We know it takes alot of work to organize and run a regatta.

We appreciate it!

-The Texas A&M at Galveston sailing team.
