OK, thanks Yaron.  The relevance of  "#set" completely passed me by.  I had
to read back through past posts to really understand what your suggestion
actually meant.  However, I've got it now, having realised that we need to
pair the #set command with a #show in order to replicate the functionality
we had before.

So, it's all working now, or, at least, will be, once I've traced all the
templates that contain properties that may be affected.
