The version number "1.5a" is just to indicate that this is, in principle, the
development version of SMW 1.5. This does not preclude further releases in the
1.4 branch. I am unsure what the best naming scheme would be. We usually used
<Nextmajorversion><Letter>, as in "1.4a". The advantage is that, using
standard version number comparison algorithms as in PHP, you have

1.4a < 1.4.0

Now the next logical thing would be to have a version between 1.4.0 and 1.4.1.
This would require a scheme like "1.4.0a", since "1.4.1a" > "1.4.1". Another
option would be to go back to write "1.4h" or something, but this does not
clarify that the version is post-1.4.0. Overall, I do not see a very pretty
solution here, but I can change the string in SVN according to proposals. One
option would be to really switch to a scheme where the post-release versions
are marked by appending letters (so it is 1.4.0a indeed, and something like
"1.4.0f" might become released as "1.5" when ready :-/).

As another remark, I add that the name "1.4.0" does not imply that "1.4.1" is
planned (even though, in this case, we intend a minor bug-fix update like
this). The reason for calling it "1.4.0" again is that

1.4 < 1.4a < ... < 1.4g < 1.4.0

If it was called "1.4" it would order before the devel versions that were its
predecessors.

Cheers,

Markus
