I think the CPAN stuff is a great idea. But have you considered using
svdlibc ( http://tedlab.mit.edu/~dr/SVDLIBC/ ) instead? It's basically
a reimplementation of svdpackc with a cleaner interface, and it's in
sort of active development. The drawback is that it only implements
the lanczos2 algorithm, but I think SC only uses that.
