I gave a talk at a workshop at the end of August that took place in the
Danube Delta of Romania. The workshop was called Crazy Futures III, and
brought together futurists and NLP folks to talk about areas of common
interest, most notably perhaps the problem of horizon scanning.

My talk was about lexicography, which I think has some connection to
horizon scanning. It also connects to some of the work we've done with
SenseClusters. I've atttached the slides here.

After the presentation I followed up with the following, which relates to
questions asked or comments made after the presentation.

Wendy recommended Word Spy, which I have since investigated and plan to
spend more time with - it's quite nice, and seems like an excellent source
for new and emerging words.

Related to this, somehow, is another favorite of mine, called Wordnik. It
includes a web interface and an API if one wishes to access it via programs.

The idea of a dictionary that defines the sentiment of words was mentioned,
and a few examples exist :

Rex recommended the book "The Lexicographer's Dilemma", which looks
positively great to me. Here's a short excerpt to give you a feel of it.

Simon Winchester has written two rather good books about dictionaries,
particularly focusing on OED. Both are far more engaging than one might
first expect books about a dictionary to be (one of them even features
murder!).

The Professor and the Madman

The Meaning of Everything

And here is a lecture by Winchester on the second book, which gives a nice
overview of the history of OED.

And there's more! BBC created a rather nice documentary about pioneering
lexicographer Samuel Johnson which I think is a good deal of fun (they wear
costumes) but is also pretty reliable and accurate.

Enjoy,
Ted
