Gravity does a pretty decent job of that already. And it's not as if there
were problems with Nissans flying off the road from excessive lift. Or
maybe I'm not driving fast enough. Also there are other ways of generating
downforce than putting a hideous piece of metal on the back of an otherwise
attractive car. For instance, the front air dam and side aero kits CAN
actually be functional in this regard. One way to generate negative lift is
to limit the amount of airflow under the car.
I dispute the assertion that many people are putting spoilers on for
downforce (at least in general). For one thing, how many of these people
have put a wing on the back and then tuned it for the correct amount of
downforce? If the wing isn't functional, it's pure drag and that's not
smart, performance-wise. Putting a wing on the back of a Sentra makes just
a tiny bit more sense than putting a wing on the back of a pickup truck
(where, incidentally, it's almost entirely out of the airstream). But
that's not saying much.

those aluminum spoilers that people are sportin' these days aren't for for
just looks, many of them keep the rear of the car down on the ground. But,
if they're in it for the "styling", it's for that rallye look.
