I had a similar problem on my 91 xe. But my gas and temp gauges didn't
work. But they would work when I jiggled a handful of wires around under
the dash... took the bottom half of the dash off to find the bad wire and it
turns out that the wire was loose coming out of the fuse boxe. I was
pissed... I spent 2 hours looking for that damn wire, and it was right in
front of me! This might not be what is wrong in your case, but it just
brought back a bad memory.
