Hopefully this will help someone's stereo install go a little easier:

I just bought a 92 Sentra SE 2 door and wanted to upgrade the factory
speakers. It had 4 factory Clarion speakers in it. I had read a
Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) catalog and it said that 91-94 sentras
take 5.25s in the front, and 6-3/4s in the back. So I bought some new
5-1/4s from EBay.

When I took my door panels off, I was shocked to find that the factory
door speakers wern't 5.25s. They were big, non-standard, 7.5 inch,
3-screw metal plates with a tiny 4x6 speaker in the middle. It was all
one piece so you'd need a dremel tool to even cut out the 4x6 and replace
it with another. I took my factory 4x6 speaker to a car stereo shop and
they said that the only way to install my new 5.25s in the doors is to cut
a 5.25" hole in my factory speaker. They wanted $50 per side to do the
work.

I called Crutchfield to see what they had to say. They have a plastic
plate made especially for that application. They're $12 a set if you buy
them alone, but free if you buy speakers. So I bought some 6.75s for the
rear and he threw in the front plates for free. He also mentioned that
the front plates will work with both 5.25s and 6.5s. Plus he threw in a
speaker wiring harness that adaepts the factory speaker plug to fit the
aftermarket speakers. Very nice :)

I just recieved the crutchfield plates and they fit my 5.25s perfect.
Just for fun I tried my 6.75s in them. They were way too big. Apperantly
there is a big difference between 6.5s and 6.75s. I don't have any 6.5s
to see if they would fit.

Although my 5.25s fit in the crutchfield adapter plates perfect and the
3-screw plates fit the door perfect, once I mounted the speakers in the
plates, the screws and clips that hold the speakers to the plates stick
out too far and don't allow the plates to fit the door anymore. so I
either need to cut the speaker screws off short, or cut my door speaker
hole a little wider. Bummer. So I'm still working on the door speakers.

The 6-3/4 rear speakers fit perfect. No hassels at all.
