Excellent question. I don't have exactly the same car as you ('91 American
XE) but if it's the same rear deck, I feel your pain (a little American joke
there). I was able to put in a hefty pair of 6x9s, but I had to use a
spacer (I think it was 13/16" plywood; can't wait to go Metric. Call it
2cm.) in order for the magnet to clear the trunk hinge rods. You are
correct on the deck; if you can find someone to make you a custom rear deck
covering I highly recommend you cover the entire thing with plywood (or
LDPB) of a similar thickness and have them carpet or apply some other
covering.
Before I put these in I had a pair of Infinity 6.5" speakers that fit with
very minor mods. "Very minor" means a little bit of sheet metal trimming
and drilling of new holes for the screws.
Hope this helped.

Subject: SML-NON-P: Speakers
Does anybody know what kind of speakers that are factory fitted in the 1992
European Nissan 100NX/Sentra. I could, off course, pop the covers in my car
open, but its easier to ask someone who knows. Does anyone know of a list
of speakers that fit in the original spaces?
The sound in my speakers is pretty thin and I was thinking of adding an amp
and some 6x9's. The cover over the trunk seems thin, and can probably not
hold heavy speakers.
Have any of you guys added more heavy speakers?
.... and while I am asking questions; What is the meaning of life?
