I took my 93 XE to Sears to get my breaks looked at. They said that I
needed new front rotors and new drums because they were too worn too turn.
I agreed because it had been a long time since I had my front rotors
replaced and my drums are stock. (My car has 163K) I said I couldn't
afford to do both so just do the front brakes. Two months later, I took my
car to Nissan to do a full inspection. (I think it's called a one hundred
and something point inspection) where they check like everything on the
car. I got a laundry list of items that needed to be replaced or repaired.
In all, it cost me over $1000 to fix everything from belts and hoses, to
replacing my front axle. One of the things that came up was my back
brakes. They said they could turn them and they would be fine. I thought to
myself, "Cool...I guess I DON"T need new drums. Those SEARS people were
trying to rip me off"
Now, seven months later, my car is making horrible noises from the brakes.
So I took it back to Sears thinking it was the front brakes (cause they are
under warranty) and had them checked again. They said the front brakes are
fine but the back brakes are really jacked up. They are out of round and
the brake pad is bumping the drum because they are like warped. He said
they are way past spec and cannot be turned any more. Now I'm
thinking,"Holy crap, Sears was right and Nissan just screwed me!"
Now...should Nissan fix my back brakes for free because they did something
they should not have done? Or at least if I get new back brakes, shouldn't
they deduct the price of the earlier job. My rear drums are shot because
they thought they could turn them one more time when in fact they should
have been replaced. I believe that they knew that they were out of spec
and turned them anyway knowing that I would soon be back with bad brakes
again. I am going to confront Nissan with this but I wanted to get some
opinions first. I know that some of you may work at a car service place or
know someone who does and could give me some advice.
