Harkin (D-IA), will vote on the 2013 health research and services spending bill, which funds the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevenion (CDC). The President's FY2013 budget, which is a guideline for the subcommittee, has proposed to flat-fund the NIH at $30.7 billion, a funding level which would result in a reduced number of NIH grants at a time when they are already at historically low levels. In addition, the President's FY2013 budget proposed 10.8% funding cuts to the CDC. A recently published study in the April 2012 issue of Critical Care Medicine established that critical care research is already underfunded relative to the amount of healthcare dollars spent.
