Thanks for sharing that Candy! Perhaps if we use the color coding in a way
used elsewhere. Off the chart and on the patient?

Would it work to use the existing color coding of mandatory patient slippers
that they wear in the ED anyway for fall prevention. Perhaps you could
RE-use the color coding they do for fall prevention. Green slippers for
patients that have been determined initially to be 'all clear' of the sepsis
protocol and likely headed home. Yellow slippers for patients that have
started the protocol and write the T0 time on the slipper itself. And red
slippers for patients where the timeline is less than 6 hours (Critical).
This color coding works for fall prevention, perhaps it would work for the
sepsis protocol in the same fashion. Patients without slippers have either
taken them off or haven't been reviewed and are at risk of falling anyway.

Just a suggestion.

I made a few, laminated, had a neon green wedge that covered the 6H window
between identification (time zero) and the end of the 6H goal. I rarely saw
it in use and if it was it was because I started it myself. I think visual
cues never hurt and depending on the culture of the ED, it may prove
beneficial. In my personal experience it did not, BUT I chose not to focus
so much on use of the clock and focus more on what was being done to the
patient.

Does anyone have success with using a "Sepsis Clock" for patients that
present to the ED?

I am thinking of trialing them just as a visual reminder to the Nursing
staff.

Thoughts from anyone?
