Hi,

Our Sepsis Value Improvement Team has reinforced over the past several years a
few things about antibiotics after doing some searching to dispel some myths.

1. That there is no guideline/evidence to not give 2 antibiotics at the
same time. Many reactions are delayed. Many nurses were taught this in school
or have recollection of learning it but there is no real evidence behind.

2. We have posted a compatibility to chart on our sepsis posters and
education to either give 2 antibiotics though separate lines at the same time
or give together through 1 line if feasible. We have focused on the timeliness
of antibiotics.

Subject: Re: [Sepsis Groups] Administering IV Antibiotics

I understand there are those who are hesitant in administering two new
antibiotics to a patient because it would be difficult to determine the
offending drug during a drug reaction. As I see it, and as I practice, the
concurrent administration of the antibiotics is more important than the risk of
a reaction. Especially when using nepho/hepato-insulting vein irritating
vesicant antibiotics that must be infused over a longer period of time.

Not too sure how others feel about the question.

Cliff.

Can you please tell me thoughts on administering two IV antibiotics
simultaneously to patients with severe sepsis or septic shock?
