RE altered mental status
We are continuing to use altered mental status as a SIRS criteria but not an
organ failure sign regardless of CMS definitions

At our institution we have traditionally called sepsis with AMS severe sepsis
but this is not listed in the surviving sepsis guidelines as one of the
criteria. It is listed as one of the "traditional" definitions in the earlier
guidelines and in an article just published in journal of hospital medicine.
Is Altered mental status in the setting of infection considered a dx of severe
sepsis?
