I don't have a recent experience, however, a number of years ago we were selected for IPPS Validation including SEP-1. As best I can recall only a couple of SEP-1 encounters were selected along with a variety of other measures. The opportunities identified (I think we had two) were considered educational because the outcome of the abstraction (pass the measure or fail) did not change. The "educational opportunity" I remember was regarding discharge time. Our nursing staff begin the documentation process as soon as the order for discharge is given. The time the documentation began was documented in our record and CDAC considered that the earliest documented discharge time even though it was evident in the record the patient wasn't actually discharged, wheeled out of the building, until hours later.
