I've been working on these for a little while, and thinking about the implementation for a lot longer, and I'm happy to get these in before 3.2:

FYI, tomorrow is the deadline for additional features to make it into 3.2. I'm planning to release 3.2 on Thursday. I'd love to get feedback on these new features and have the tested with other databases. Currently, I've only tested them on the PostgreSQL 8.4 release candidate.
