I've now got a file-based hsqldb in-place (once I remebered to use login "sa" with no password for the login, as this is the default created). However, I get exactly the same problem, it seems - I have a hang on "enable backend1", and the full controller log can be seen here:

http://ohmslaw.org.uk/controllerLog-withHsqlForRecoveryDB.txt
Aha - I turned log4j for Jgroups from WARN to DEBUG, and I have a lot more output to look at now:

11:27:09,196 DEBUG continuent.hedera.adapters Sending message 0 to 1 members.
[snip]
Of particular interest is:

DEBUG jgroups.protocols.UDP sending msg to null (src=192.168.0.128:32962), headers are {PING=[PING: type=GET_MBRS_REQ, arg=null], UDP=[channel_name=myDB]}

So it's sending a message to "null". Perhaps an IP address or identifier of some sort should be there instead of null....
Ok, I've got it working. I could have sworn I tried this before, but I've just tried disabling the firewall completely, and it works now.
So it was a networking problem.
What ports should I open to allow these comms? They're around the 32000 range it seems..
.
Thanks to all for your help!
Alex
