You can use a simple nagios_tcp port check.  The logs may get a bit
congested, however does the trick.  A mysql select 1, would be a bit of
a redundant check.  Something to access the JMX interface would be the
best suggestion.

I have seen emails on the mailing list in the past of people using 
Nagios but unfortunately I don't think that anyone has contributed those
