Portugal Just Banned Democracy

An anti austerity coalition consisting of various left wing parties and led the
the Portuguese socialist party gained majority of votes in parliament only to
be refused entry to government by Anibal Cavaco Silva, Portugal’s
constitutional president on the grounds of “national interest”.

The Telegraph reports

 ;

Portugal has entered dangerous political waters. For the first time since the
creation of Europe’s monetary union, a member state has taken the explicit step
of forbidding eurosceptic parties from taking office on the grounds of national
interest.

Anibal Cavaco Silva, Portugal’s constitutional president, has refused to
appoint a Left-wing coalition government even though it secured an absolute
majority in the Portuguese parliament and won a mandate to smash the austerity
regime bequeathed by the EU-IMF Troika.”

According the Portuguese president;

“In 40 years of democracy, no government in Portugal has ever depended on the
support of anti-European forces, that is to say forces that campaigned to
abrogate the Lisbon Treaty, the Fiscal Compact, the Growth and Stability Pact,
as well as to dismantle monetary union and take Portugal out of the euro, in
addition to wanting the dissolution of NATO,”

Although this is certainly the most obvious display of the European Union’s
truly undemocratic nature in recent times, it is unfortunately not the first
time that a European Union member state has spat in the face of actual
democracy. When Ireland voted no

to the Lisbon treaty, a treaty that vastly consolidated political power in the
E.U away from member states and into the hands of Brussels, the Irish
government, being unhappy with the outcome of democracy, simply held another
vote. ‘Yes vote’ propaganda was intensified by Irish establishment media
outlets and the rest is history. A very unhappy, poverty stricken and austerity
riddled history.

With the prevailing attitude of “you can vote but only the way we want you to”
coming from Brussels and their European puppet governments it will be
interesting to see how much more blatant fascistic behavior Europeans will
stand, especially with secret trade like TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and
Investment Partnership) on the cards.

Euroskeptic groups are gaining traction throughout Europe in response to issues
that seem inseparable from being in the E.U, like austerity. Both the left and
the right have made major gains <http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27559714>
since the 2008 financial crash. Unfortunately, in the case of countries like
Portugal and Ireland the established response is to simply suspend democracy.
