I follow (well, try to) the git mailing list and it seems to me that the submodule implementation is still a bit problematic because there were lots of questions/problems reported on the list. Also debian lenny currently has git 1.5.6.5 and the latest stable is 1.6.2.1, so most of won't have the most recent features and fixes.
