MailImpl (the actual implementation) implements its own readObject/writeObject methods, which do not marshall the MimeMessage. MimeMessageWrapper's parent class is javax.mail.internet.MimeMessage, which is not serializable. All versions of MailImpl in CVS explicitly marshall the data members that make up the desired persistent state, and so should not exhibit the problem you report.
