I was connecting to the wrong port: 443 (https) instead of 465 (smtps). Now James
presents itself, but still does not respond to my further commands, so I still need
help on the openssl utility.

TLS-enabled SMTPServer fails to response for ending email session after sending data
ending with <CRLF>.<CRLF> (I type . beginning from the new line and then hit return).
I tested it using OpenSSL client.
