I know that James does not announce 8BITMIME support in reply to an EHLO command but (as far as I know the smtp handler) it probably handle 8bitmime correctly.
Have you previously done any test about 8BITMIME? If not, I will try to add 8BITMIME keyword to the supported extension list of my personal server to find out possible data corruption.
