Btw I think that the avalon framework itself is a good thing to james and we could adapt james to run under j2ee or spring without getting rid of avalon interfaces.
I also would keep the avalon framework. It's not too complicated and it is much less work :-).
The jee world can be reached with a handful of EJBs querying the stores of james and also can easily produced with EJB 3.0 or XDoclet.
