no, you are right. small fix improves the situation a little bit, but
overall it seems still a problem (as the original reporter of the issue
is reporting, too).
if you guys want to handle this - there you go. you have way more
experience with this code.
I am going to get some dinner. When I come back I will check e-mail, and
then look at making the larger change if no one thinks differently
(including me, after I take time to look at it again).

also, Stefano's patch seems worth having a look at.
