You use UIDL to get the ID's of the messages and maintain a local list
of states of messages, so "marking a message unread" doesn't need the
server, it just uses the local list.
Sent items is usually just a locally held copy of a message which has
been sucessfully sent to the first mailserver. If it doen;t get any
further you get a delivery status notification (DSN) email.
