I don't understand how you can define the "STATUS" command as "stateless". THe purpose of the STATUS command is to retrieve a STATE, so there is something stateful, or you don't need the status at all ;-)

Btw I this we are simply talking about 2 different layers of this architecture.

How 'heavyweight' a session is, depends on its implementation. If sufficient, an implementation can do just nothing on session opening. Other implementations and backends may require doing some preparation
before giving access to any data.
