(i'm interested in JDO and would be much more likely to contribute to
a OpenJPA implementation than to a plain hibernate one. the OpenJPA
team is also very friendly so i'm sure that they'd be happy to help
out with architecture.)
IMHO a much better strategy would be to use Cayenne as an ORM:

It is much easier to learn and thanks to it's Modeler that just
works (Cayenne Modeler: http://cayenne.apache.org/doc20/modeler-guide.html)
one is productive right away (without previous Cayenne knowledge).

Another advantage (besides the very high productivity) is that it does not 
require
JDK 1.5 (one can use it but it's not a requirement)
