(i'm interested in JDO and would be much more likely to contribute to a OpenJPA implementation than to a plain hibernate one. the OpenJPA team is also very friendly so i'm sure that they'd be happy to help out with architecture.)
IMHO a much better strategy would be to use Cayenne as an ORM: http://cayenne.apache.org/ It is much easier to learn and thanks to it's Modeler that just works (Cayenne Modeler: http://cayenne.apache.org/doc20/modeler-guide.html) one is productive right away (without previous Cayenne knowledge).
