+1 for making this configurable.
+1 for keeping '.' as a default.
However is it needed to be overly restrictive? I well see the next PR be "Hey
please allow me to use '|' because GOOD_REASON and it had been anticipated"? If
an admin touches this property he likely knows what he is doing....
