Just throwing this question out there far+wide, so that different perspectives are all considered, before we later come to a decision :-)
#schoolserver excerpt: <m_anish__> jvonau, think that 'git' probably isn't the means to distribute/roll-out updates, we used to have rpms once upon a time, or maybe simple tarballs will do even (i'm talking only about whats in /opt/schoolserver/xsce) <m_anish__> (like the tarball github can generated on a release tag) .. that could be a way? <m_anish__> but perhaps i'm thinking about this backwards, and you're thinking from a good-practice pov. so would do a bit of stfw myself :) <jvonau> m_anish: then we might "install" via https://github.com/XSCE/xsce/archive/stable.tar.gz but there is code in place within the 'xsce' directory that assumes that the directory is a git repo, to untrack vars/local_vars.yml, Not saying that it's not do-able but we would need to adjust some code. <m_anish__> i guess it needs to be thought thru. thanks for raising the issue
