When I have seen this before with a version of Digester it's because of a trailing space after a number value in the config file. I suggest removing the quotes (if you are quoting the value) and ensure no leading or training white space around the value.
Also there's a "gotcha" with James and 1.4.2 which is just being discussed on the James Developer list - look for Noel's posting, which might explain why putting a new version of Digester in the SAR fixes your problem. Lindsay -----Original Message----- From: Bosco So [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 01 August 2003 23:06 To: James Users List Subject: commons-digester.jar (v1.5) causes James startup crash I spent the whole morning chasing down this bug. When I include version 1.5 of commons-digester.jar in my SAR, I get this error (plus a stack trace): Bad specification version format '"1.5"' in 'org.apache.commons.digester'. (Reason: java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: ""1") I can send the whole stack trace to whoever's interested. If I unjar commons-digester, rejar it, and deploy it in my SAR, everything's OK. I'm using Sun's j2sdk 1.4.2 on RedHat linux 8.0 (with latest updates). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
