Hi Mateusz,
I've downloaded and run the current test release (2.2.0a12) and James
starts OK on both XP and RH 9.

Are you sure about the James version number?
James 1.2.2 is very old. 
http://jakarta.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi has the current stable
release (2.1)
Or you can use http://cvs.apache.org/builds/james-server/test-build/ if
you want the current test version
