By default outgoing e-mail is only accepted from localhost. To allow other addresses to send outgoing e-mail, you have to add its address. Rather than add individual addresses, you can add network definitions. For example, your e-mail address is @mac.com [17.250.248.32]. That is part of a netblock owned by Apple Computer, Inc: http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput=17.250.248.32.
