Does anybody have a setup with a backup mail server? How do you do it?
We use DRBD + hearbeat for such things. DRBD is something like raid1
over tcp. So you can setup 2 servers. One as primary and one as
secondary. The primary maps the mx ip as virtual ip, mount the DRBD
device (which contain all james data) and run the james service. The
Secondary sync in realtime with the primary. If the primary goes down
the secondary become master, bind the virtual ip, mount the DRBD device
and start the needed services etc.
For more info see:

We use such a setup about over 2 years now in many installations. It
works perfectly!
