Why didn't anybody mention that thing before? Turned out one of the blocks I had in the old config.xml wouldn't work with the new one (and after playing around with it I decided it was easier to re-write the config than to try and make the old one work)... What happened to backwards compatibility eh?
Now it starts up fine (and seems to work faster than the old one!).
