Thanks Bernd, I had the same thought when it first occurred and tried many
times, being careful to avoid typos and not using backspace, delete, or
anything that might introduce special characters.  The output I posted was
the result of that.  Sometimes it works the first time, no errors. 
Sometimes it gives that error and I have to enter the commands repeatedly to
get one that works correctly.
