It's not clear what is "slow". Does "It's very slow to get mail from James" means that reading from POP3 is slow? Is the slow part the connection or also the single message retrieval? Is it the transfer of the message? The listing of new messages? I don't have any clue of your issue so if you provide more detailed description of what you see it would help. You could try with a manual telnet session to port 110 to better see what is happening. telnet jameshost 110 > USER username > PASS pass > LIST > RETR 1 > QUIT understanding in what of the commands above is the bottleneck is important.
