How do you expect ping to help you look for MX records for the domain
part of the mail address?

mavs.uta.edu does indeed have an MX record:
1851571482.mail.exchangelabs.com and that mail server is reachable on
port 25. Unless someone has changed that mail server's configuration
between your first mail and my response, I have no clue where the error
message "501 5.5.4 Invalid domain name" originates from. The mentioned
mail server is at least now accepting mails for t...@mavs.uta.edu when
talking SMTP to it directly:
