Which version do you use?

Here, I had to upgrade from 3-beta4 to a snapshot because of slow 
outgoing delivery. It just sounded as a regression.

You could also raise the deliveryThreads number in your RemoteDelivery 
mailet configuration.

Have you implemented any special processing which could slow down the 
delivery?

What about the environment: The primary DNS is fine (if not, it wait a 
while before going to the secondary DNS), do some remote SMTP hang...?

You can also add more debugging and analyse the log (see 
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMES-1428 to know how)

Keep us updated, we really need to solve this,
