hi Marc I'm not a james expert, but as a generic observation, since any mail exchanger should allow local users to send mail (but indeed prevent relaying from other sources unless explicitly deciding to allow them), I suggest reverting to standard config and starting from there.
There is a write up of an even more ancient James version here (using maildir) https://dmatthews.org/java_email.html where I did have configs with everything working.
