Hi Patrick,

Well, Java is a set of specifications and Artix is a
product that implements many of them.

What I was referring to though is the fact that Sun
runs the Java Community Process, which approves all
Java specifications.  Although the JCP is open to
anyone, and many companies also serve on the executive
committee (as we have done for the past four years or
so), Sun reserves the ability to have the final word. 
So it was in that sense that I meant Java is
controlled by Sun, since they control the process by
which its specifications are created and approved for
publication.  They also control the intellectual
property associated with the specification development
process.
