A key issue is that the software organization seems for the most part to 
be pre-occupied with development of technology which is mostly 
commoditized (how many J2EE frameworks are there etc?).  I say this 
because in many cases, one can find quality opensource offerings that 
compete in the same space.

If you want to do the MBO thing and stand a chance you need some value 
and I just don't see that in the available software because they've kind 
of stopped innovating, they follow rather than lead.  They've also 
opensource'd a lot of stuff which might have had value if they'd chosen 
to productize instead.

The most interesting stuff I've seen is the talked about but rarely seen 
N1 and the grid bits but they suffer from a lack of development 
direction and there's no clear vision to shoot at.

Of course, the software organization may be being forced into it's 
current pre-occupations by the sales teams but having talked to a number 
of engineers and their managers, I'm not convinced that's the case.
