You're right, there are not many technical reasons behind why WS-* is
"everywhere".
The primary reason that I see why most vendors do/will support WS is because
they are just jumping on the Microsoft bandwagon. They think that if they
aren't prepared to play in the Microsoft world, they'll not be a part of the
"wave". This is very much the Lemmings game that Microsoft is great at leading
software vendors into playing. Follow Microsoft and you'll always be behind
their intended goal, and always be spending monies playing the catchup game.
It's a sad story, but interesting to watch happen over and over and over.
