_It_is_only_my_assumption_, but I don't believe that getting all the
vendors to support the protocol is necessarily a direct objective. If a
standard protocol for messaging existed I suspect they feel they would
be better off than they are with each vendor using a closed, proprietary
protocol.
The broad range of products aren't the result of a concious decision to
diversify but are accumulated over many years, sometimes through
acquisitions, new initiatives etc. Rationalization is in that type of an
environment an ongoing activity and increased interoperability would
make it easier to manage.
