Hmmm..."enormous amounts of tiny messages" not suitable for HTTP? Isn't this exactly what AJAX is doing? Google maps sends an HTTP request every time you scroll your mouse! If you want to see an HTTP-based IM client check out meebo.com. I use it every day. It's great.
