<<Last night, I sat in a restaurant and, as usual, wound up overhearing a conversation in the next booth about IT. Seems like there's an IT person everywhere you look these days, talking about how the latest integration project is going, or how he can't find talent, or how he loved my last column (OK, maybe just wishful thinking). One subject I keep hearing about more and more is assembling applications from parts instead of building them. Hmmm, composite applications—that sounds nice. Let's listen:
Woman: "So did you hear that our developers assembled the new taxation system out of pre-built parts? They got it done in just eight weeks." Man: "Wow. We tried that but we couldn't get our developers to trust anybody else's code. They just rewrote everything." Woman: "Well, you should buy them some reuse tools so they can tie into other systems." Man: "We tried that, too, but they say the tools just slow them down. Now, we are thinking about bringing in an integrator to take over." Woman: "Hmmm. That sounds nice. Should we order wine?">> I know - sad isn't it? Well at least she had the wit to think of getting a drink.
