In simple terms... no.  If you have a production line that is churning
out 10,000 cans of beans an hour then you can't have it waiting for 2
seconds , or 2 hours in the case of network failure, for a response
from a computer to say "make more of the ones with sausages" and
setting up the production line accordingly.  Now the link back to the
ERP back probably handle the tolerances and be at the other end of a
messaging system or ESB, but the plant control system needs to work
within tight bounds.

I'm not sure how async and an ESB would address
