I'll admit to not following some of the more verbose threads on this
list in great detail, but I'm not sure how the two concepts are
opposites. Services, especially those running in a robust and
scalable SOA, provide a useful tool for integration, as shown in my
telco example. This is related to the use of services to build
composite applications.
