Yes, that's the first step.

The second step is to get your hands on a recent binary build of the
trunk. There's no need to build it yourself unless you want to do so
as you can just download a binary build from the development snapshots
here:

http://incubator.apache.org/servicemix/download.html

Then use it like you would normally use ServiceMix.
