I understand them better now thanks, but I have a major problem.

In my design I have different users logging in, i.e. different
usernames and passwords that HAVE to be used. By this I cannot not
have a generic user ID and password for logging in.

They must log in with their password and id.

You should read up on the general functionality of a Connection Pool.
You are
not creating a new one each time, you are creating the pool once and
accessing
it multiple times from your servlets. Check out:

for a (much) more detailed explanation of how to use a Connection
Pool.
